Monchhichis were born in 1974 in Japan, created by the Sekiguchi company. These dolls were designed by Koichi Sekiguchi, who sought to create a toy that would promote love and peace through its cuteness and unique design. Inspired by the concept of a baby monkey, the first Monchhichi was distinguished by its soft plush, smiling face, and characteristic thumb-sucking hands.

The name "Monchhichi" comes from the combination of three words:

  • "Mon", from monkey (in French), due to its appearance similar to a small monkey.
  • "Chi" meaning small or sweet in Japanese.
  • "Chichi," which suggests the sucking sound babies make.

Global popularity

Monchhichi's success was immediate in Japan, and it soon spread to other countries, becoming a worldwide phenomenon in the 1970s and 1980s. In Europe, especially in Germany and France, it achieved great popularity, while in the United States an animated television series called The Monchhichis was launched in the 1980s, which strengthened its fame.

A timeless toy

Over the years, Monchhichis have evolved with new versions, including different sizes, themed clothing and special editions. Despite the changes, their classic design and charm remain intact, making them still popular among children and collectors of all ages.

Today, Monchhichi is a symbol of nostalgia, quality and sweetness, and remains a beloved companion for those looking to relive the magic of their childhood or share it with new generations.
