Gift and toy guide by age: what to give at each stage
The most frequently asked question at Älva is always the same: "What should I get them?" And the answer almost always depends on one thing: age. Not because children are all the same — they aren't — but because each stage brings completely different needs, abilities, and ways of exploring the world.
This guide is our honest answer, from the store, with products we know and trust.
0 to 6 months — Welcome to the World
In the first few months, the baby is discovering their senses one by one. Everything is new: light, sound, touch. The best gifts are those that accompany this awakening without overwhelming.
For clothing: comfortable bodysuits, soft pajamas, and cheerful outfits that are easy to put on and take off — there are many changes. Accessories like blankets and swaddles are essential and always a good gift choice.
For toys: comforters and attachment toys, rattles, safe teething toys, crib mobiles, and black and white contrast cards — the baby's visual system is still maturing, and strong contrasts are what they perceive best. Nightlights are also a very practical gift for the whole family.
6 to 18 months — On the Move
This stage changes everything. The baby starts to crawl, stand, and take their first steps. The world becomes enormous, and everything needs to be explored. Gifts must rise to the occasion.
For toys: teethers (still useful during teething), bath toys, sensory and musical toys to stimulate all senses. Stacking and nesting toys to develop coordination and basic logic. Balls of different sizes and wheeled toys that encourage movement and accompany crawling and first steps.
For clothing: comfortable and durable clothes for daycare. Non-slip socks and booties — essential when they start walking. Sun hats and approved sunglasses, especially in summer.
1 to 3 years — The Great Awakening
Between 1 and 3 years old, children experience rapid progress in their ability to think, learn, and understand the world. This is the stage where the foundations of creativity, curiosity, and social skills are formed. Play is their main tool — and it must be chosen well.
Important note: small parts are still a risk at this stage. Always look for toys with large parts that are safe for the indicated age.
For toys: first puzzles with large pieces, nesting toys, magnetic construction sets, and wooden blocks that develop logic and fine motor skills. Activities involving touch, sight, and hearing are fundamental for sensory and cognitive development. Real first musical instruments — not toys — to truly explore sound. Comforters and attachment dolls. Books without text, where the child creates the story.
For clothing: clothes for walking, running, and playing in the park. They should be durable, comfortable, and it shouldn't matter too much if they end up covered in dirt. Because that's what's supposed to happen.
Over 3 years old — Little People with Their Own Opinions
From 3 years old, generalizing is almost impossible. Each child has their own world, interests, and personality. But there's one thing that always works: toys that open up possibilities instead of limiting them.
Symbolic play is key at this stage — games where they can pretend to be doctors, chefs, or any other profession help develop their creativity and understanding of the social environment. Kitchens, doctor's sets, vet kits, cleaning sets — anything that allows them to imitate and reinvent the adult world in their own way.
Construction games — trains, wooden blocks, magnetic pieces — are perfect because they allow for individual play, play with other children, and with adults. From 3 years old, children begin to move from parallel play to more interactive play. Games that facilitate this leap are the most valuable.
And real musical instruments: a harmonica, maracas, a quality xylophone. They don't have to be big — they just need to sound good and be durable.
For clothing, this is when they start to have very clear opinions about what they want to wear. At Älva, we have the most original and cheerful sustainable children's fashion to accompany that blossoming personality — gender-neutral, colorful, with true design.
And for school: backpacks, water bottles, and accessories with a very special touch. Because going to school can also have its own style.
